DESCRIPTION

BAYA MAHIEDDINE (Bordj El Kiffan, Algeria, 1931 – Blida, Algeria, 1998)
Untitled, 1981.
Watercolor on paper.
Signed and dated.
Provenance: Maison de Vente Aux Enchères Cannes Enchères, France, 2021.
Measurements: 63 x 49 cm; 82 x 61.5 cm with frame.

In this 1981 watercolor, Baya explores one of the central motifs of her artistic vision: the female figure surrounded by birds, vegetation, and ornamental forms. The composition is structured by a firm, sinuous black line that outlines the figures and lends the scene an intense graphic presence.

Color, applied with great freedom, plays an essential role. Blues, pinks, yellows, greens, and reds cover the surfaces in decorative patterns, circles, and stripes that transform the image into a vibrant space, reminiscent of dreams, fairy tales, and Algerian folk tradition. The woman, the bird, and the garden appear united in a scene imbued with deep poetic resonance, where the feminine is associated with fertility, music, and imagination.

The work is particularly representative of Baya’s mature style, characterized by the frontal orientation of the figures, rich ornamentation, and the creation of a universe of her own—one removed from naturalism and closer to a magical and symbolic vision of reality.

Baya Mahieddine, born Fatma Haddad, was one of the leading figures in 20th-century Algerian art. Self-taught, she achieved international renown in 1947 when she exhibited at the Galerie Maeght in Paris with an essay by André Breton. Her work caught the attention of artists and intellectuals of the time, and she maintained ties with Picasso’s circle during her stay in Vallauris.

Her painting is characterized by a highly personal style, often associated with Surrealism, naïve art, and Maghreb modernity. Her compositions, populated by women, birds, flowers, musical instruments, and fantastical creatures, have been celebrated in recent years by international institutions. Her work is represented at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts in Algiers, the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, and the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, among other institutions.
