ISABEL GUERRA PEÑAMARÍA (Madrid, 1947)
“Portrait of José Romay y Acuña,” 1967.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower left corner.
The subject’s name appears on the identification plaque.
Measurements: 71 x 55 cm.
In this portrait, Isabel Guerra combines a naturalistic depiction of the subject’s features with a freer style in the clothing and background. The subject, dressed in a dark suit, white shirt, and tie, stands against a neutral background of broad brushstrokes and visible texture, which draws the viewer’s attention to the face. The lighting, concentrated on the forehead, cheekbones, and eyes, lends psychological depth to the subject. The palette of grays, blues, and ochres reinforces the composition’s sober and intimate character. Dated 1967, the work belongs to the artist’s early period and already reveals her interest in the human figure, light, and the Spanish tradition of portraiture.
Isabel Guerra began painting at a very young age and completed her training by studying the great masters at the Prado Museum. At the age of fifteen, she held her first solo exhibition in Madrid. In 1970, she entered the Cistercian Monastery of Santa Lucía in Zaragoza, where she has pursued an extensive career focused on figurative painting. She is a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Historical Sciences of Toledo and an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Luis in Zaragoza.
