In *Geronimo*, Lita Cabellut presents a male face in profile emerging from the far right of a space dominated by darkness. The striking proximity of the subject, framed by the edges of the square format, focuses attention on his features and imbues the image with an intense psychological dimension.

The face is rendered in shades of gray and pink, applied in layers that alternate areas of greater definition with others that are partially blurred. The nose, lips, and jaw retain a sculptural presence, while the eye and the back of the head are blurred amid glazes, smudges, and broad brushstrokes. Around it, the deep blacks are interrupted by energetic swaths of magenta and violet, splatters, and small accumulations of paint that introduce movement and tension to the surface.

The contrast between the serenity of the profile and the gestural intensity of the background transforms the portrait into a reflection on memory, resistance, and the construction of identity. The image does not seek merely to describe the subject’s external appearance, but rather to suggest an inner experience marked by conflict and wear and tear. The partial dissolution of the face thus seems to allude to the fragility of historical memory and the difficulty of establishing an identity subject to successive interpretations.

Dated 2003, the work belongs to a relatively early stage in Cabellut’s career, while bringing together elements that would define the artistic language for which she is internationally recognized: psychological portraiture, an interest in characters with strong symbolic significance, and the use of the pictorial surface as a metaphor for experiences inscribed on the skin.

Based in the Netherlands, Lita Cabellut pursues a multidisciplinary practice focused particularly on the human figure. Her career has been the subject of exhibitions at the Fundació Vila Casas in Barcelona, the Museum JAN in Amstelveen, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and the Bancaja Foundation—institutions that have presented comprehensive surveys of her work.
