The series *Meer und Land* (Sea and Land), created during the 1990s, occupies a central place in Ingeborg Lüscher’s photographic oeuvre. In it, the artist explores the processes of nature’s transformation through images that place photography on the boundary between objective observation and abstraction. Unlike the landscape tradition, Lüscher does not seek to represent a specific place. Her interest is directed toward those transient phenomena—foam, reflections, particles of light, and shifting textures—that transform the surface of the sea into a space of continuous change. Photography thus ceases to function as a descriptive medium and becomes an instrument of knowledge, capable of revealing visual structures that usually remain beyond our perception.
Ingeborg Lüscher is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans photography, installation, video, and object-based work. Before devoting herself fully to the visual arts, she pursued a career as an actress in Germany and Switzerland. Although her artistic training was essentially self-taught, her career was closely linked to some of the major debates in European conceptual art. Since the 1970s, she has held major solo and group exhibitions at institutions in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Austria, and other European countries. Her work has been shown in museums such as the Kunstmuseum Bern, the Museum Tinguely (Basel), the Kunsthaus Zürich, and the Museo d’Arte della Svizzera Italiana (MASI) (Lugano), as well as in numerous galleries and centers dedicated to contemporary art. She has also participated in various projects linked to the Venice Biennale. Her work is part of major public and private collections, including those of the Kunstmuseum Bern, the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Museum Tinguely (Basel), the Museo d’Arte della Svizzera Italiana (MASI), the Fondazione Marguerite Arp, as well as various Swiss and German institutional collections dedicated to contemporary art.
