Work belonging to the “Selfie” series, in which Trujillo addresses the relationship between image, city, tourism, and visual culture through pop art and a contemporary perspective. In “Madroño,” the artist places a female figure in the foreground, captured in the everyday act of photographing the Bear and the Strawberry Tree sculpture—an emblem of Madrid—with her cell phone.
The composition combines an aesthetic reminiscent of comics and pop art with a clean pictorial construction, featuring intense colors, defined contours, and a strong visual impact. The hallmarks of the contrast between the monumentalized figure of the young woman, rendered with sharp lines and brilliant colors, and the more painterly urban background are tension between reality, icon, and digital representation. The scene reflects on the way in which symbolic places are today consumed, reinterpreted, and transformed into images through mobile devices.
Trujillo is a contemporary Cuban visual artist with extensive artistic training. In 1995, he completed a vocational training program in the arts, specializing in printmaking, and in 2006, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Heritage from the University of the Arts (ISA) in Havana. In 2022, he completed the Official Master’s Degree in Management of Artistic and Architectural Heritage, Museums, and the Art Market at the University of Santiago de Compostela.
She has participated in various solo and group exhibitions, as well as in national and international competitions, winning awards and receiving honorable mentions for artistic merit. Her work is held in foundations and private collections in Miami, Panama City, Cuba, Colombia, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Finland, Italy, Belgium, China, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, among other countries.
