DESCRIPTION
Pair of candlesticks; Spain, late nineteenth century.
Silver.
They do not have punch.
Measurements: 33 x 12 cm (x2).
Weight: 641 g.
These slender candlesticks respond to a historicist taste characteristic of nineteenth century Spanish silverware, where the reinterpretation of past styles becomes the dominant language. They stand on a lobed triangular base with supports in the form of small scrolls, richly decorated with vegetal reliefs and baroque-inspired motifs. The shaft, elongated and faceted, presents fine chiseled work that alternates smooth surfaces with textured fields, providing dynamism and contrast. At the top, the wax-collecting dish, with a wavy rim, is decorated with delicate engraved garlands that reinforce its elegance.
These pieces reflect the continuity of the Spanish silversmith tradition, heir to the great Baroque workshops, but reinterpreted under the eclectic sensibility of the 19th century. Their ornamentation, meticulous but balanced, and their careful execution are evidence of an object conceived for use as much as for representation.
