BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pyx; Toledo, XVI century.
Silver.
Presents punches.
Measurements: 15,5 x 10,5 cm.
Weight: 460 g.
Pyx made in Toledo during the 16th century, made in silver and destined, as is typical of this typology, to the custody of the consecrated forms in the context of the Catholic Church. Its liturgical function is inscribed in the core of the Eucharistic ritual, linked to the celebration of the Eucharist, which explains both the quality of the material and the formal care of its execution.
From the morphological point of view, the pyx has a convex body with a rounded profile, whose surface is articulated by means of smooth vertical ribs that generate an undulating rhythm. This treatment not only dynamizes the form, but also refers to late Renaissance solutions, where plasticity and the play of light on the polished metal take on a prominent role. The vessel rises on a molded foot that ensures stability and reinforces the verticality of the whole.
The lid, also rounded, culminates in a figurative element of notable interest: a small round sculpture representing a soldier dressed in armor and helmet, leaning on a spear. This finial replaces the more usual cross, introducing a singular iconography that could be interpreted in a symbolic key, possibly alluding to the idea of vigilance or custody of the Sacrament. The inclusion of human figures as finials, although less frequent, is not foreign to Renaissance silverware, particularly in areas where devotional or allegorical narratives are emphasized.
In technical terms, the piece shows an expert mastery of casting, chiseling and polishing techniques, characteristic of the Toledo workshops of the 16th century, heirs of a prestigious goldsmith tradition in the Iberian Peninsula. Toledo, a historic center of metallurgical production, maintained during this period a notable activity in the creation of liturgical objects, adapting formal languages to the functional demands of worship.
