BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of jewelry boxes: HENRY MATTHEWS, Birmingham, 1910.
Silver and tortoiseshell.
They bear hallmarks.
Measurements: 4 x 9 x 4 cm; 3.5 x 8 x 5 cm.
Weight: 172 g.
A pair of jewelry boxes crafted in silver and tortoiseshell by the renowned silversmith Henry Matthews in Birmingham around 1910, during the Edwardian period. The set stands out for its delicate tortoiseshell lids with neoclassical-style silver ornamentation, featuring garlands, floral motifs, and a central medallion, all framed by a fine braided border.
The boxes come in two complementary shapes—one rectangular and the other oval—both resting on elegantly designed legs that lend them a sense of visual lightness and sophistication. The quality of their craftsmanship reflects the mastery of Henry Matthews, one of the most renowned silversmiths of Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter, famous for producing small silver objects of exquisite detail between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century.
