Hallmarked and enameled silver box, an example of 19th-century French silversmithing, a period in which the decorative arts experienced extraordinary development thanks to the revival of traditional techniques and the refinement of artisanal processes. The box features a refined polygonal shape with understated lines, whose geometry foreshadows a modern sensibility without sacrificing the ornamental refinement characteristic of the 19th century. Its surface is coated with a translucent blue enamel applied using the guilloché technique, in which a background previously engraved with a wavy motif creates a play of reflections beneath the transparency of the enamel. The center of the lid is embellished with an openwork and chiseled silver plate, whose rocaille-inspired floral decoration is a hallmark of the piece's geometric purity. This dialogue between the historicist repertoire—evident in the exuberance of the scrollwork and plant motifs—and a composition of restrained lines reflects the eclecticism characteristic of French decorative arts in the second half of the 19th century, when the reinterpretation of historical styles coexisted with a growing interest in formal clarity and technical perfection.
The presence of hallmarks on the silver certifies both the metal’s fineness and the oversight exercised by official bodies over French goldsmithing production—a guarantee of quality and authenticity in a craft that enjoyed recognized international prestige.
