Isidore of Seville (probably Seville, c. 560 - Seville, 636) was a Catholic ecclesiastic, scholar and Hispanic polymath of the Visigothic period. He was bishop of Seville for more than three decades (602-636). He is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church and is considered the last Father of the Church.

Etymologies is the best known work of St. Isidore of Seville. It takes its name from the teaching procedure he uses, explaining the etymology of each word related to the subject. The title may also come from the subject matter of one of the twenty books of which the work is composed (specifically the tenth). It was written by Isidore shortly before his death, in full maturity (627-630), at the request of Braulius, bishop of Saragossa.
