DESCRIPTION

French school; end of XIX century.
"Christ on the way to Calvary".
Oil on zinc.
Presents faults.
Measurements: 65,5 x 75 cm.
In the XIX century, the French school recovered with force the religious themes, and among them the Fall of Christ on Calvary gained special relevance. This interest was reinforced by the influence of the group of the Nazarenes, a Germanic movement of the early nineteenth century that advocated a return to the spiritual and formal purity of medieval painting and the early Italian Renaissance. Its aesthetics, characterized by clear drawing, idealized figures, serene composition and a clear moralizing sense, had a remarkable diffusion in Europe and exerted a perceptible echo in part of French religious painting.
