BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
"J. FIN"; JOSÉ VILATÓ RUIZ (Barcelona, 1916 - Paris, 1969).
"Still life".
Oil on canvas adhered to board.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 44 x 60 cm.; 61 x 78 cm.(frame).
This still life condenses characteristic features of the plastic language of J. Fin: a fragmented structure that derives from cubism, a sober but vibrant palette, and an angular stroke that decomposes the objects without losing their physical presence. The scene evidences his interest in spatial construction and in the tension between form and color, elements that, in his Parisian maturity, became constants in his painting. The result is a dynamic, almost architectural still life, which evidences his personal assimilation of the European avant-garde.
José Vilató Ruiz, "J. Fin", Picasso's nephew, was trained at the Sant Jordi School and began exhibiting at a very young age. After the Civil War he moved between Spain and France, finally joining the Parisian art scene in 1946. There he interacted with leading figures of the avant-garde and developed a work marked by cubism and formal synthesis. He alternated painting, sculpture and muralism, held exhibitions in Spain and Europe, and consolidated his own style within post-war modernism. His work was recognized posthumously with an anthology in 1971.
