The painting of popular types in 19th century Spain became popular as part of a growing interest in reflecting the national identity through the representation of daily life and regional customs. This genre, linked to costumbrismo, captured the attention of both artists and an increasingly urban public sensitized to popular traditions.
The Industrial Revolution and the processes of social modernization generated in art a nostalgic and romantic look towards the popular classes, seen as the depositaries of a disappearing cultural authenticity.
