Spanish painter and watercolorist who cultivated genre and religious themes. He was professor of coloring and composition, as well as director of the Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos. He studied drawing at the School of the Casino Obrero in Valencia, at the Academy of Fine Arts of Valencia, and furthered his training with the sculptor José Guzmán Cuallar. In 1891, he moved to Rome to continue his studies thanks to a pension granted to him by the Provincial Council of Valencia; there he attended the Chigi Academy. He sent his works to artistic contests and competitions and in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts of 1895 he obtained a second medal for the canvas entitled Estudio de desnudo (Nude Study). Excellent watercolorist of virtuous brushstroke, his painting is characterized by an impeccable technique and in his sculptural work Garnelo approaches the popular imagery.
