BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian School; 17th century.
“Allegory of Love.”
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 129 x 93 cm; 153 x 117 cm (frame).
The composition depicts Cupid, the personification of Love in classical mythology, portrayed as a youthful figure and surrounded by the attributes that identify him: the bow and quiver with his arrows, instruments of his power over gods and mortals. A garland of ivy completes the scene’s symbolic repertoire, while other elements—such as a crown and an instrument placed in the background—expand its allegorical dimension and evoke associations between love, beauty, desire, and the arts. The figure stands out as the protagonist of the composition through a volumetric treatment with a distinctly Baroque character. The modeling of the anatomy, the arrangement of the elements, and the contrast between the illuminated areas and the areas of shadow create a sense of presence and depth characteristic of 17th-century Italian painting. The use of chiaroscuro helps focus attention on the figure and her attributes, lending the depiction a visual intensity that transcends mere mythological description.
The painting is part of the rich Italian figurative tradition of the 17th century, a period of profound artistic transformation in which the classical and Renaissance heritage coexisted with the new forms of expression of the Baroque. During this century, Italy was one of the main centers for the production and dissemination of European painting. Rome, in particular, exerted a decisive influence as a hub of artistic exchange, fostered by papal and aristocratic patronage as well as that of major collecting families. In this environment, mythological and allegorical subjects retained a prominent place, both in palace decorations and in private collections.
