DESCRIPTION

Viceroyal School; 17th century.
“Archangel Saint Gabriel.”
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 117 x 95 cm; 131 x 108 cm (frame).
This painting is an interesting example of religious art from the colonial period, in which celestial iconography is enriched with elements characteristic of the courtly and military aesthetics of the Baroque. The Archangel Saint Gabriel is depicted full-length, with outstretched wings and richly ornamented attire, consisting of a green doublet, puffed sleeves, profusely decorated lace, stockings, and shoes adorned with ribbons and jewels. The wide red cloak, draped in a sweeping motion, lends dynamism to the composition and contrasts with the sobriety of the dark background. The figure holds a white lily, a traditional attribute of the archangel associated with purity and the announcement of the Incarnation.
The work is part of an iconographic tradition that was widespread during the 17th and 18th centuries, characterized by the depiction of angels in attire inspired by the clothing of the aristocracy and the military of the time. These images, known for their distinctive portrayal of military angels, transposed the codes of honor, authority, and distinction characteristic of Baroque society into the celestial realm. Although it shares this visual language, the absence of weapons distinguishes it from depictions strictly classified as “archer angels.”
One of the most distinctive aspects of the colonial school is precisely its reinterpretation of European religious iconography through its own visual language, in which the Christian imagination is combined with a taste for ornamentation, chromatic intensity, and the depiction of sumptuous attire. In contrast to European models, these paintings developed an aesthetic of exceptional decorative richness, in which fabrics, embroidery, jewelry, and textile elements take center stage.
