DESCRIPTION

After ANTON VAN DYCK (Antwerp, Belgium, 1599 – London, 1641)
“Portrait of Jan Wildens.”
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 55.5 x 46 cm; 70 x 60 cm (frame).
Portrait depicting the Flemish painter Jan Wildens (1584/1586–1653), a prominent landscape painter of the Antwerp school and a close collaborator of Peter Paul Rubens. The composition follows a portraiture style associated with Anton van Dyck, one of the key figures in 17th-century Flemish painting and one of the great portraitists of Baroque Europe. The identification of the subject is of particular historical interest, as he was an artist belonging to the prominent circle of painters active in Antwerp during the early decades of the 17th century. Jan Wildens achieved special recognition for his landscape painting and for his collaboration with Rubens.
The original composition of this portrait is known through various versions and variants preserved in European museum collections. Among the most notable examples are the paintings in the Siegerlandmuseum in Siegen and the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Kassel; the latter, dated around 1620–1621, is considered by experts to be a possible preparatory study or a partial autograph copy. The existence of these different versions highlights the widespread circulation and acceptance that Wildens’s image achieved within Flemish figurative art. The portrait of Jan Wildens belongs to a particularly significant category within Van Dyck’s oeuvre: the depiction of his contemporaries and fellow artists. In contrast to the official, ceremonial portrait—intended to exalt the dignity and power of his subjects—these images of artists have a more personal and intellectual character. The reproduction of Van Dyck’s portraits also enjoyed significant continuity through engraving. His famous series of portraits of illustrious figures, known as the *Iconographie*, created in collaboration with engravers such as Paulus Pontius, played a decisive role in disseminating the likenesses of artists, intellectuals, and prominent figures of his time.
