“Saint John.”
Carved and polychrome wooden figurehead.
Measurements: 114 x 54 x 50 cm.
An exceptional depiction of Saint John conceived as a figurehead, carved from wood and polychromed. The figure stands upright, with his head slightly raised and a serene expression on his face, framed by a profusion of curly hair and adorned with a reddish headband. He crosses both hands over his chest in a gesture of contemplation and devotion. The composition stands out for the drapery’s flowing treatment, whose vertical folds accentuate the figure’s slenderness, as well as for the meticulous execution of the hands and the expressiveness of the face. The sculpture is part of the tradition of 17th-century Spanish Baroque iconography, characterized by a pursuit of expressiveness, rich use of color, and the ability of the images to establish direct communication with the viewer.
In contrast to works intended exclusively for altarpieces or places of worship, figureheads represent a sculptural category of particular interest, situated at the intersection of the visual arts and naval architecture.
The volumetric design and vertical development of the carving reflect its specific architectural and functional purpose.Figureheads constitute one of the most distinctive manifestations of sculpture linked to European maritime culture. Located at the bow of ships, they served not only an ornamental function but were also part of a complex symbolic universe in which identity, representation, and protection were intertwined.Since antiquity, ships have incorporated images and figures intended to invoke the protection of deities and supernatural forces during voyages. This tradition found a particularly significant continuation in Christian Europe, where saints and religious invocations occupied a prominent place in the maritime imagination.
