This monumental tapestry, woven in the Faubourg Saint-Marcel workshop between 1638 and 1645, is part of the famous series dedicated to Ovid’s *Metamorphoses*, one of the most prestigious mythological cycles in 17th-century France. Inspired by the Latin writer’s poem, the series recreates various episodes from classical antiquity through a fully Baroque visual language, in which mythological tradition is combined with the courtly taste for ornamental richness and compositional theatricality. The scene, titled The Dance of the Satyrs, depicts a Bacchic procession featuring these mythological creatures associated with Dionysus’s retinue, immersed in a celebration marked by rhythm and movement. The composition stands out for its dynamism, reflected in the figures’ poses, the arrangement of the characters, and the sense of liveliness characteristic of this subject. The exuberance of the landscape, the spatial depth, and the rich color achieved through the combination of wool and silk attest to the high technical quality attained by the Parisian workshops of the time.
The preparatory cartoon is attributed to the painter Simon Vouet (1590–1649), one of the key figures in introducing the Italian Baroque style to France. His influence is evident in the monumental scale of the figures, the elegance of the drawing, and the theatrical treatment of light—elements that were transferred to the fabric with great precision by the artisans. The existence of a virtually identical piece preserved at the Château de Sully-sur-Loire, belonging to the same series of Ovid’s *Metamorphoses*, confirms the widespread use and significance of this design within French tapestry production.
The Faubourg Saint-Marcel workshop, active in Paris before the founding of the Royal Gobelins Manufactory during the reign of Louis XIV, played an essential role in establishing French tapestry as one of the most prestigious in Europe. Its workshops were distinguished by the excellence of their materials, the precision of their weaves, and their collaboration with prominent painters, establishing a production model in which painting and textile craftsmanship came together to create works intended for the most prestigious spaces of the French aristocracy and court.
