Islamic white marble capital from the Umayyad period, dated between 950 and 980 AD. The piece responds to the refined ornamental language developed in al-Andalus during the caliphate, in which the inherited classical models -such as the Corinthian capital, acanthus leaves and volutes- were reinterpreted through a more abstract, rhythmic and decorative treatment.

The surface preserves a rich and deep carving, organized in horizontal registers of vegetal motifs, scrolls and geometric elements. The fretwork in some areas, together with the relief of the leaves and the articulation of the scrolls, creates a chiaroscuro effect very characteristic of Umayyad architectural sculpture. Despite the ancient losses, the piece maintains a clear ornamental reading and a very attractive visual presence.

This type of capital was part of prestigious architectures, where marble not only fulfilled a structural or decorative function, but also expressed power, refinement and cultural continuity. The classical tradition is transformed here into a fully Islamic language, based on repetition, vegetal stylization and the elegance of the ornamental rhythm.

Due to its chronology, material, ancient provenance in a Barcelona collection and quality of carving, this is a piece of notable interest in the collection of Hispanic Islamic art. Its compact format, rich decoration and good general condition make it a particularly attractive testimony to the artistic sophistication of the Umayyad period.
