The you was a bronze ritual vessel characteristic of the high ceremonial culture of the Western Zhou Dynasty, used to store fermented wine during sacrificial rituals and offerings to the ancestors.
During the Zhou Dynasty, wine (mostly in the form of rice or millet wine) played a central role in sacrificial rituals and spiritual communion with ancestors.
You vessels, made of bronze, were decorated with relief motifs, especially: taotie (zoomorphic faces), spirals ("leiwen"), stylized dragons and symmetrical bands.
