Catalan ceramic dish from the "tie" series, so called because the first scholars who catalogued them thought that the loops on the dish reminded them of the loops on the scarves that were part of men's clothing at the time. This typology is characterised by very strong designs, with a wide variety of motifs and a wealth of detail. During the 17th century, it was very common to find dishes, albarelos and aguamanos made of blue pottery. Within this type of utensil, figural decorations were often used, these in turn divided into different series (typologies) depending on the design of the border: 'fig', 'sausage', 'thimble', 'ribbon and palmette', 'tulip' and, as in the case of the plate shown here, 'tie'. Throughout the 18th century these motifs were retained, but new ones also appeared, such as the 'earring', 'doily' and 'cherry' motifs. Following the pattern of this type of piece, we find both the brim and the seat of the decorated plate, reflecting the sensitivity of the craftsmen, the European and Oriental influences and the successive technical innovations that gave the work of Catalan potters a unique character.
