DESCRIPTION
Sideboard; Italy, 1970s.
Rattan wood.
Measurements: 93 x 219 x 52 cm.
Italian sideboard made of rattan in the 1970s. This piece reflects the innovative and carefree spirit of Italian design from that era. Its structure is made entirely of split rattan, combining the visual lightness of the material with a rich, artisanal craftsmanship. The piece features a practical and balanced layout, with four upper drawers and four cabinet doors decorated with a distinctive wavy relief pattern that adds movement and character to the design. The elegant curved legs visually elevate the piece, accentuating the sense of lightness and reinforcing its refined silhouette.
During the 1970s, Italian design underwent a profound transformation. In contrast to the rationalism of previous decades, designers and manufacturers began to explore natural materials, organic forms, and a freer, more informal aesthetic, influenced by the rise of the Mediterranean lifestyle and a growing interest in craftsmanship. Rattan and bamboo took on a special prominence at that time, finding their way into high-end furniture as a warm and sophisticated alternative to industrial materials, in a quest for a deeper connection between the home interior and nature.
This sideboard fully embodies this trend, combining traditional craftsmanship with a modern design language that remains entirely relevant today. Its aesthetic, associated with boho-chic and vintage coastal styles, brings texture, light, and warmth to any space, blending naturally into contemporary interiors as well as Mediterranean- or eclectic-inspired settings.
