BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

French school of the 14th-15th centuries.
"Adam and Eve in the Cave of Treasures".
Limestone.
Measurements: 31 x 31 x 14 cm.

Most likely the limestone sculpture in tender, dated to the late Romanesque period, represents the biblical passage of Adam and Veva in the Cave of Treasures. This chapter describes the bitter exile of Adam and Eve, who, after their transgression, are expelled from Eden by Elohim's command to the confines of the Cave of Treasures. Crossing the threshold of Paradise, the first parents are assailed by fragility and dread before an unknown and hostile world. In the midst of their desolation, the Word of Elohim descends to infuse them with encouragement, revealing to them a promise of final redemption: the end of their exile after a cycle of five and a half days, a mystical figure that prefigures a 5,500-year wait. The story captures the couple's deep lament for the loss of their primordial home and the uncertainty they feel about their new earthly existence.
