BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of scissors armchairs or jamugas. XIX century.
Grenadian wood and inlay.
Exhibits wear consistent with age and use. In need of restoration.
Measurements: 82 x 73 x 45 cm.

These elegant scissor armchairs are an example of Andalusian historicist furniture, specifically from the tradition of Granada, characterized by its exquisite inlay work and Mudejar reminiscences.

They are made of wood profusely decorated with inlaid inlay (a laborious art of inlaying wood, bone or mother-of-pearl) drawing geometric and starry motifs, evocative of Islamic art. The upper extremities, which serve as armrests, are elegantly turned outward, reinforcing the sculptural silhouette of the whole.

The structure of both armchairs responds to the typology of the curul or folding chair, with X-shaped lateral supports, a design inherited from classical antiquity that was reinterpreted during the Renaissance and recovered again in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries as a symbol of distinction.
