BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Louis XV-style chest of drawers; France, ca. 1920.

Shows signs of craquelure.
Measurements: 85 x 91 x 50 cm.
Far from being a mere historicist copy, this piece reflects the continuity of a tradition of craftsmanship and a mastery of the ornamental repertoires established during the reign of Louis XV. Its design corresponds to the commode tombeau, one of the most characteristic forms of the Louis XV period. The pronounced bombé curve of the front and sides creates a sinuous volume that breaks with the geometric rigidity of the earlier Baroque style and fully expresses the language of French Rococo. The two drawers, arranged without a visible central divider, accentuate the continuity of the surfaces. One of the most interesting aspects of this piece is the use of Chinese-inspired lacquer, a legacy of the phenomenon known as chinoiserie, one of the most distinctive manifestations of European taste for the Far East during the 17th and 18th centuries. The landscapes featuring pavilions, boats, arched bridges, and Oriental figures do not aim to faithfully reproduce Chinese art, but rather to evoke an idealized world that fascinated European courts. This exotic imagery had a particularly strong influence in France, where cabinetmakers developed complex techniques to imitate Oriental lacquers using the so-called “vernis Martin” and other decorative methods.
Made around 1920, this chest of drawers dates from a period of remarkable revitalization in the French decorative arts. While the modernist movement was beginning to transform European design, numerous workshops in Paris continued to produce furniture inspired by the great national styles for embassies, luxury hotels, aristocratic residences, and collectors. These pieces were valued not as industrial reproductions, but as works of cabinetmaking, crafted with solid oak frames, traditional joinery, and a careful selection of materials.
