BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of Louis XVI candlesticks; France, c. 1800.
Mercury-gilded bronze, partially blued.
Measurements: 38 x 35 x 13 cm (x2).
Pair of Louis XVI-style fireplace candlesticks, crafted in gilded bronze with a sculptural design. Although originally conceived as functional elements, candlesticks took on a distinctly representational character beginning in the Baroque period, becoming true sculptures in their own right. Both pieces feature a symmetrical composition, mounted on a solid, architecturally inspired base, profusely ornamented with reliefs of plant motifs, garlands, and classical elements, executed with meticulous modeling and chiseling. The structure has a bold, rounded profile, carefully organized through molded and recessed planes that establish a hierarchy among the composition’s various sections. This formal rigor reflects the principles of order, proportion, and balance inherited from classical architecture, which are so characteristic of the Louis XVI style. At one end, the base culminates in an elegant, ancient-inspired cup—a recurring motif in the neoclassical ornamental repertoire and a symbol of the renewed interest in Greco-Roman antiquity.
The Louis XVI style marked a break with the exuberance of the Rococo style that had developed during the reign of Louis XV. In contrast to the dynamism of curved lines and asymmetrical ornamentation, the new aesthetic revived the clarity of geometric forms and a composition governed by symmetry and restraint. Rectangles, circles, ovals, and straight lines replaced the sinuous rocaille motifs, while the decorative repertoire drew inspiration from the classical world, incorporating garlands, laurel leaves, palmettes, torches, roses, crowns, and other archaeological motifs that reflected the influence of the discoveries at Pompeii and Herculaneum and the rise of Neoclassicism.
