The present work is inscribed in the pictorial tradition of the Italian school of the second half of the XVIII century, a period characterized by the survival of the late Baroque sensibility and its progressive purification towards more contained languages.
From the stylistic point of view, the canvas reveals a careful attention to the modeling of the face and hands, resolved through a soft and directed lighting that emphasizes the inner expression of the saint. The chiaroscuro, still present, is used with moderation, not to dramatize the scene excessively, but to isolate the figure on a neutral and warm background, favoring the viewer's concentration on the character's state of mind. The palette, dominated by ochers, browns and earth tones, reinforces the austere character of the Franciscan iconography, while the subtle carnal nuances contribute verisimilitude and delicacy to the whole.
The theme responds to a widely spread iconography: St. Anthony of Padua appears in a contemplative attitude, with his gaze raised and his hand resting on his chest, a gesture that alludes to inner devotion and mystical surrender. The presence of the lily, traditional symbol of purity and holiness, confirms the identification of the saint and acts as a narrative and symbolic element at the same time.
