"Immaculate Conception.
Oil on canvas.
Preserves original canvas.
Measurements: 164 x 110 cm.
Reinterpreted here according to the new aesthetic ideals of the period but preserving its devotional and doctrinal character, this Immaculate Conception reveals a clear will of balance, formal clarity and expressive serenity, typical features of the transition from the late baroque to the enlightened academicism.
The figure of the Virgin is presented with restrained elegance, harmonious proportions and collected gesture. Her face, with a sweet and meditative expression, transmits a calm spirituality, far from the intense baroque pathos. The composition is stable and orderly, with a moderate ascending movement that reinforces the idea of purity and elevation without resorting to dynamic excesses.
From the stylistic point of view, precise drawing and a smooth and controlled brushstroke predominate. The chromatic range, dominated by luminous blues and whites, is applied with cleanliness and balance, underlining the Marian symbolism of purity and grace. The light is uniform and enveloping, eliminating strong hallmarks and creating a clear and peaceful atmosphere.
This Immaculate Conception is a representative example of Spanish religious painting of the late 18th century, where tradition and modernity coexist in an image intended both for aesthetic contemplation and for the intimate devotion of the faithful.
