BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

JORGE MANUEL THEOTOCÓPULI (Toledo, 1578-Toledo, 1631)
"Portrait of a Dominican".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 59 x 42 cm; 72 x 56 cm (frame).
This sober Portrait of a Dominican offers an effigy of intense psychological presence, built from the formal austerity and spiritual concentration. The friar is depicted half bust, cut out against a dark and neutral background that cancels any spatial distraction and directs all attention to the face. The gaze, slightly deviated, is deep and vigilant, full of introspection, while the angular features and the dry modeling emphasize an ascetic character in accordance with the spirituality of the Dominican order.
The black habit, treated with restrained brushstrokes and without decorative concessions, reinforces the severity of the image. The only elements that break this sobriety are the rosary and the cross hanging from the chest, discreet symbolic accents that allude to religious life and constant meditation on faith. The light, precisely directed towards the face, outlines the features with a firm and effective chiaroscuro, creating an atmosphere of silence and recollection that intensifies the devotional character of the portrait.
From the stylistic point of view, the work is fully in the pictorial tradition inherited from El Greco, whose influence decisively marked the production of his son Jorge Manuel. The simple composition, the dark background, the restrained expressiveness and the almost obsessive attention to the face as a reflection of the soul respond to the aesthetic principles of the Cretan master, reinterpreted here with a more sober and less audacious language. In contrast to the formal radicalism of his father, Jorge Manuel opts for a more contained, solid and balanced painting, without renouncing spiritual intensity.
Trained in his father's workshop, where he worked until the death of El Greco, Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli developed a multifaceted career as a painter, architect and master builder. Although his pictorial production prolongs the models and formulas of his father, his greatest recognition came in the field of architecture, where he reached positions of great prestige, such as that of master builder of the cathedral of Toledo and author of the project for the city's City Hall. This portrait, however, demonstrates his ability to capture with rigor and sensitivity the human and spiritual dimension of the sitter, making it an eloquent testimony of the religious portrait of Toledo in the first third of the 17th century.
