BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Attributed to AMBROSIUS BENSON (Lombardy, active in Bruges from 1518 - Bruges, 1550).
"Madonna and Child".
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 111 x 81 cm; 129 x 99 cm (frame).

We appreciate in this panel stylistic attributes of great refinement, which characterized the work of Ambrosius Benson: in particular, the fusion between Italianate softness in the modeling of the faces and the meticulous precision inherited from the Flemish tradition; the oval and serene typology of the Virgin; the delicate treatment of the flesh tones; and the almost microscopic attention to details such as the transparency of the veil or the heavy texture of the cloths.

Likewise, the compositional structure - monumental figures in the foreground, dark background ennobled by drapery and the presence of carefully described symbolic elements - responds to the usual formulas in his Bruges workshop.

The scene, deeply devotional, is articulated around a rich symbolic program. Mary's red mantle alludes to the Caritas and anticipates the Passion by evoking the blood of Christ. The green drapery acts as a canopy of honor, underlining the regal and divine dignity of the group. The lilies represent the purity of the Virgin, while the red flowers refer to the future sacrifice.

Ambrosius Benson, active in Bruges since 1518, was a key figure in 16th century Flemish painting. Trained with Gerard David and independent master since 1519, he developed a workshop of remarkable production, with special projection towards the Spanish market, where his work was widely appreciated and exported. Part of the last generation of Bruges painters, he knew how to combine the Nordic tradition with the formal innovations of the Italian Renaissance, bringing greater monumentality and plastic refinement to compositions with Flemish roots. Although only a few signed works are preserved, his attributed catalog is extensive and his presence is now represented in major international collections.
