The work evidences the high quality of the Italian school of the time, particularly in its mastery of chiaroscuro: the directed illumination, almost theatrical, models the face of the saint and his anatomy with a plastic force that refers to the heritage of Caravaggio and his followers. This resource not only builds volume, but also establishes an introspective atmosphere, where the penumbra envelops the scene and accentuates the meditative character of the figure.
The treatment of St. Jerome's face is one of the most successful aspects of the work. The deeply marked wrinkles, the thick beard and the concentrated gesture do not respond to a classical idealization, but to a penetrating naturalism that seeks to reflect the spiritual experience through the aged body. This emphasis on physical truth, combined with expressive restraint, is characteristic of Italian Baroque painting, which aspired to move the viewer through an almost tangible closeness to what is represented. The color, dominated by earthy tones and the intense red of the cloak, brings a symbolic charge, alluding to both the sacrifice and the dignity of the saint and at the same time balances the composition.
The choice of St. Jerome as a subject is neither accidental nor isolated. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, his figure was extraordinarily popular in Italy and throughout Catholic Europe, largely because of his status as a scholar, translator of the Bible and model of penance. In the context of the Counter-Reformation, his image served as an example of introspection, spiritual discipline and rejection of the worldly, values actively promoted by the Church. Depictions of the penitent Saint Jerome, in particular, offered artists the opportunity to explore the expression of inner suffering and redemption, central themes of Baroque art.
