BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Central European school of the second half of the 19th century.
"Male nude".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 90 x 60 cm; 100 x 67 cm (frame).
Academic representation of male nude, in which a naturalistic language prevails, seeking the anatomical veracity. It shows us the young body of a man, not idealized in the marmoreal rigidity of the classic, but captured in the fullness of its naturalness: erect in a slight contrapposto and without affectation, more fruit of the corporal habit than of the calculated pose.
On the right shoulder rests a simple rod, held with the same hand; the gesture does not exhale grandiloquence, but a serene dignity of the everyday. The body, of harmonious proportions, unfolds in its volumes: the turned legs, rounded knees and perfectly described, reveal a meticulous study of the anatomy. The forward leg rests just the tip of the foot on the ground, insinuating in the calf a play of tensions that vibrates under the skin, while the toes have been worked with the utmost care.
The flesh pulsates under the light with the softness of an academic naturalism: smooth epidermis, shades of a rosy face typical of a youthful vigor. Above the lips, the moustache appears with aristocratic grace, its tips curved just upwards. The forehead, clear and luminous, gives the countenance a frank clarity, without veils or shaving.
The background, of a neutral darkness, gathers and exalts the figure, while the floor of a warmer brown places the character in the room. The light, distributed with mastery, caresses each muscle, each concavity and relief of the body, modeling it with austere voluptuousness, giving the composition a quiet solemnity.
