A small box crafted from 800 sterling silver with vermeil enamel inlay, representative of Florentine silversmithing from the second half of the 20th century. Its surface features delicate chiseled decoration of plant scrolls and Rococo motifs framing a central panel of polychrome enamel depicting an 18th-century-inspired pastoral scene. The combination of finely worked silver and hand-painted enamel highlights the continuity of the Florentine artisanal tradition, characterized by the revival of historical designs and the meticulous quality of its finishes.
During the 20th century, Florence consolidated its prestige as one of Italy’s leading centers for the production of luxury silver objects, maintaining a silversmithing tradition that began in the Renaissance. In the 1960s and 1970s, numerous Florentine workshops developed products aimed at the international market, drawing inspiration from European Baroque and Rococo decorative styles. Boxes, chests, and dressing table accessories such as this example combine traditional techniques of chasing, silver plating, and enameling with a refined historicist aesthetic, resulting in decorative pieces of exceptional craftsmanship that are prized by both collectors and the decorative arts market.
