This tableware set, consisting of four glass salt cellars with silver mounts and their corresponding spoons, is an excellent example of the work of the French firm Maingourd Frères. The combination of glass and silver reflects the characteristic decorative style of the period, in which functionality was integrated with meticulous craftsmanship. The glass containers kept the salt protected from moisture, while the silver mounts and spoons added a touch of distinction to the table setting. This type of set was common on the most refined tables and formed part of the household furnishings of affluent families, reflecting the codes of etiquette and social interaction typical of the late 19th century.
Maingourd Frères was a prominent French watchmaking, jewelry, and silversmithing firm established in the city of Le Mans during the second half of the 19th century. At a time when France was experiencing remarkable industrial and commercial development, the firm established itself as a business dedicated to the sale and craftsmanship of watches, jewelry, and luxury items, earning the recognition of a clientele seeking elegant, high-quality pieces. The Maingourd brothers continued the region’s watchmaking tradition and, at a certain point, succeeded the former firm of Victorin Boëteau, a renowned local watchmaker. This continuity is reflected in numerous pieces bearing the inscription “Ancienne Maison Victorin Boëteau – Maingourd Frères, successeurs,” a phrase used to instill confidence in customers and preserve the prestige of the original business.During the final decades of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century, the company experienced its most prosperous period. Its products stood out for the elegance of their finishes, the quality of their materials, and the refinement of their designs, making the company a regional leader in the luxury goods trade.
