DESCRIPTION
Empire clock. France, ca. 1800.
"Pendule au negre.
Mercury gilt bronze.
Hour and half chimes with chime.
Includes key.
Measurements: 38 x 31 x 11 cm.
Magnificent table clock of the Empire period, belonging to the appreciated type known as pendule au nègre, models very coveted by collectors for the narrative force of their compositions and for the sculptural quality typical of the best French bronze artists of the early nineteenth century.
The scene features a large cotton bale that serves as a clock case, next to which rests the figure of an African worker, modeled in patinated bronze and contrasted with gilded bronze accents. Such depictions, common in Napoleonic and post-Revolutionary decorative iconography, reflect both the European fascination with the exotic and the growing importance of the colonial cotton trade in the French economy. The plinth incorporates reliefs alluding to the production and transportation of cotton, reinforcing the symbolic reading of the whole.
The piece combines the structural elegance characteristic of the Empire style with the meticulousness of the mercury-gilded bronze work, a technique that gives the surface an exceptional brilliance and tonal depth. This type of clock not only functioned as precision instruments, but also as prestige objects, designed to decorate aristocratic and bourgeois interiors, and today highly valued on the international market for their rarity, integrity and historical significance.
