Italian-designed umbrella stand attributed to Gabriella Crespi, made in the 1970s. With a cylindrical body, it is crafted from rattan arranged in horizontal rings, topped with a brass band—a combination of materials characteristic of sophisticated Italian design from the 1970s. The piece stands out for the contrast between the warmth and natural texture of the rattan and the shiny finish of the brass—an aesthetic language associated with Gabriella Crespi’s work, in which artisanal materials and metallic elements are integrated into objects of great decorative elegance. Due to its formal simplicity and visual quality, it stands as an attractive example of 1970s Italian design, conceived as both a functional and decorative object.
Gabriella Crespi (1922–2017) was an Italian architect and designer trained at the Polytechnic University of Milan, where she was influenced by figures such as Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright. She began her career with the “Small Lune Collection,” a series of abstract metal sculptures, and later collaborated with Maison Dior in the 1960s.
