ELISABETTA SIRANI (Bologna, 1638–1665)
“Saint Jerome Listening to the Trumpets of the Last Judgment.”
Oil on canvas. Stretched.
Measurements: 110 x 85 cm.
The composition depicts Saint Jerome at the moment he receives the announcement of the Last Judgment, in a rendering of great dramatic and spiritual intensity. The saint is depicted in the foreground, his torso partially bare and covered by a wide red cloak that envelops his figure. His face, framed by a full head of hair and a long white beard, is raised toward the sky, following the appearance of a heavenly trumpet that bursts into the upper left corner of the composition. The figure is rendered in a half-length composition of great expressive intensity, directing all attention toward the protagonist’s face and gesture. The upward movement of his gaze establishes a direct connection with the trumpet, making this element the narrative core of the scene.
The work is connected to the artistic milieu of 17th-century Bologna, one of the key centers of Italian painting. A highly influential pictorial tradition developed in this city, initiated by the artistic renewal of the Carracci and continued by masters such as Guido Reni, Domenichino, and Guercino. Within this context, Elisabetta Sirani (1638–1665) stands out as one of the most notable artists of the Italian Baroque. The daughter and pupil of Giovanni Andrea Sirani, a collaborator of Guido Reni, she received a training deeply rooted in Bolognese classicism, though she developed her own artistic style, characterized by fluid brushwork, rich colors, and a special sensitivity for expressing emotions. Her body of work encompassed religious, mythological, and allegorical subjects as well as portraits, and she stood out for her ability to endow her figures with an intense psychological presence. In her religious compositions, the formal elegance inherited from the tradition of Guido Reni coexists with a greater narrative immediacy and a particular attention to gestures and expressions. Sirani achieved extraordinary recognition during her brief career. She ran the family studio, received important commissions from the nobility and religious institutions, and opened a painting school for women in Bologna.
