Acephalous female bust. Rome, 3rd century A.D.
Marble.
Provenance: Private collection, Barcelona, Spain.
State of conservation: good condition. It presents superficial wear typical of its age.
Measurements: 43,5 cm high.
Roman female bust, datable to the 3rd century A.D., preserved without head. The work focuses its interest in the treatment of the torso and, especially, in the elaborate arrangement of the cloths, which wrap the body by means of wide crossed folds and give the figure a solemn and refined presence.
The carving of the dress reveals a clear ornamental will. The folds, deep and carefully ordered, generate a play of light and shadow that brings movement to the surface of the marble. This richness in the treatment of the drapery is characteristic of Roman sculpture of the Imperial period, where the dress not only covers the body, but also contributes to express dignity, status and elegance.
Although the loss of the head prevents the identification of the original physiognomic type, the bust retains a very attractive sculptural reading thanks to the quality of the marble, the amplitude of the volumes and the decorative strength of the drapery. Its format links it to the field of Roman female portraiture, probably intended for a funerary, domestic or commemorative context.
The piece has a remarkable archaeological and decorative value: its fragmentary condition accentuates the beauty of the torso and allows us to appreciate with particular clarity the virtuosity of the drapery, making it an elegant testimony of late Roman sculpture.
