DESCRIPTION
Figure. China, early 20th century.
"Emperor on elephant".
Enameled white porcelain white China style.
Measurements: 41,5 x 28 x 15 cm.
White porcelain sculpture representing Guanyin, bodhisattva of compassion, sitting in a serene attitude on a running elephant. The figure appears with recollected expression and idealized features, dressed in wide clothes with flowing folds and rich details, holding a ritual attribute in his hands. The elephant, modeled with great naturalism and volumetric softness, symbolizes contained strength, wisdom and spiritual stability, while the calm posture of the deity reinforces the devotional and contemplative character of the whole.
The piece belongs to the tradition of white monochrome porcelains known as Dehua or "Chinese white", produced mainly in the province of Fujian. This type of porcelain, with its characteristic ivory tone and smooth and satin texture, was especially appreciated both in the religious and decorative fields, reaching great diffusion in the European market under the denomination of blanc de Chine.
