DESCRIPTION

SERGIO MAZZA (Milan, 1931) for Domus.
Table. Italy, 1956.
Original formica top.
Steel and brass base.
Bibliography: Domus 8336 11/1957.
Measurements: 200 x 91 x 80 cm.

Important mid-centuty style table, with black steel legs in cross brace and adjustable feet in polished solid brass. The top, with slightly curved profiles, is made of formica. It is an elegant design in which we identify the aesthetic and formal achievements of Sergio Mazza, author of iconic furniture. Its legs are adjustable and precisely combine functionalism and aesthetics. Mazza created this piece for Domus, winner of a 1956 competition.

Italian architect Mazza founded the Artemide brand in Milan with aeronautical engineer Ernesto Gismondi. Despite the artisanal beginnings, the beginnings proved fruitful: in a short time, Artemide established itself as one of the most qualified brands in its sector, beginning to collaborate with designers such as Magistretti, BBPR, Gio Ponti and Livio Castiglioni, thus laying the foundations for its future expansion. In the 1960s, Mazza designed for the brand its most famous lamps, those in nickel-plated brass, opaline glass and crystal: cult objects and heritage of prestigious international museums, from hanging lamps such as Delta and Tau to the Clio wall lamp. The peculiarity of Artemide products of that time is that, on the one hand, they guarantee the aesthetics and essential technologies of industrial design, but, at the same time, they manage to express the Italian tradition through the sophisticated choice and processing of materials. As for the "Toga" chair, it is one of the objects of furniture that have gone down in the history of Italian industrial design, becoming a popular icon having permanently entered the television scenes of the 1960s, such as that of "Space 1999".
