Catalan botanist, ornithologist and mineralogist, Josep Monlau was a naturalist and author of several works on botany, ornithology, mineralogy and agriculture, very popular in the scholarly world of his time. In 1854 he graduated in natural sciences at the Central University and received his doctorate in 1855. From 1855 he was professor of Natural History and Agriculture at the Balearic Institute, a position he also held later at the Institute of Barcelona (1862-1872) and Tortosa (1873-1874), to return again to the Institut Balear (1874-1898). He was a member of the Ateneo Balear. He was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona and Knight of the Royal and Distinguished Spanish Order of Carlos III. He was also a founding member of the Spanish Anthropological Society. He was president of the Balearic Chamber of Agriculture (1899-1908).
