Johann Heinrich Samuel Formey was a German ecclesiastic, educator, writer and journalist. The son of a family of French immigrants, he preached, taught and wrote in French. A founding member of the Berlin Academy, he wrote thousands of letters, disseminated scientific and philosophical ideas, and contributed to Diderot's Encyclopédie.
