Benito Jerónimo Feijoo y Montenegro (Pereiro de Aguiar, Orense, 1676-Oviedo, 1764) was a Benedictine religious, essayist and Spanish polygraph. Together with the Valencian Gregorio Mayans, he is the most outstanding figure of the first Spanish Enlightenment. He is the author of the speech Defensa de mujeres (1726), considered the first treatise of Spanish feminism.
