This episode is only quoted in the Gospel of St. Matthew (2:13-15), where it is explained that after the departure of the wise men, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and warned him to take Mary and Jesus and flee to a safe place in Egypt. We see Mary holding and gazing lovingly at her son wrapped in cloths, his head surrounded by a halo of light that reveals the divine nature of the character. Following the reading to the right, we see St. Joseph in profile, helping himself with a cane to make the journey.
