DESCRIPTION

NICOLÁS MEGÍA MÁRQUEZ (Fuente de Cantos, 1845-Madrid, 1917).
"The Coronation of the Virgin.
Oil on canvas.
Signed on the back.
Measurements: 28 x 22,5 cm; 40 x 35 cm (frame).
This work is inspired by "The Coronation of the Virgin", painted by Velázquez between 1635- 1635. Currently in the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, it was the last painting of religious themes enhanced by the Sevillian master. In the words of the Prado Museum, "Velázquez painted The Coronation of the Virgin for the new oratory of Queen Isabel de Borbón in the Alcázar of Madrid, where he was to complete the series of nine paintings of Alessandro Turchi's Feasts of Our Lady sent to Madrid from Rome, in 1635 or earlier, by Cardinal Gaspar de Borja y Velasco".
Engraving (dependent on the Academy of San Fernando) in Madrid, and got a pension from the Diputación de Badajoz to further his studies in Rome and Paris, from 1872 to 1880. Formed within the academic Realism thanks to masters like Federico de Madrazo and José Casado del Alisal, he participated in 1880 in the Paris Salon, achieving important recognitions in Madrid (artistic direction and teaching positions). His work is preserved in some private collections, as well as in institutions such as the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Museum of Cordoba, the National Library (Madrid), the Town Hall of Fuente de Cantos (Badajoz), etc.
