DESCRIPTION

RAMÓN LAPAYESE (Madrid, 1928-1994)
"Study of sculpture", 1973.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated on the lower right. Signed and titled on the back.
Measurements: 50 x 61 cm; 58 x 69 cm (frame).
He begins his artistic studies with his father José Lapayese. He continues them, learning sculpture with private teachers, and painting as an autodidact. At the age of fourteen, he makes his first professional sculpture. From 1942 to 1949, he studied at the School of Arts and Crafts and the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He studies solfège and violin at the Ainaud Academy. On his return to Madrid, he goes to draw at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, begins to work in ceramics, continues to study violin, harmony and composition, while making important works of sculpture; meanwhile, he continues to deepen in painting. In 1954, he receives a scholarship from the Italian Government: he studies at the Spanish Academy in Rome. In 1957, he goes to France, with a scholarship from the Government of that country, residing in the French capital for six years. In Paris, he fully develops his pictorial vocation, continues with sculpture and studies printmaking, engraving, etc., at the School of Fine Arts. From 1963 to 1984, he lived in Madrid, where he carried out his work, commissions and exhibitions of painting, sculpture and engraving. In 1984, he moved to Miami where he lived until 1993, when he returned to Spain. During those years, he paints portraits, makes nine large pictorial murals in the state of Florida, and makes exhibitions, combining these tasks with teaching at the universities of Miami (Koubek Center) and Saint Thomas, and at Florida Memorial College. During his trips to Spain, he has commissions and exhibitions. In 1994, he returns to Miami to carry out some commissions. He died in that city.
