The artist places the scene in an idealized natural setting, placing the characters in the foreground: Christ leaning on the well's curbstone, wrapped in a beautifully draped red cloak, and the woman carrying the water pitcher, approaching him. From the position and the presence of the fountain, the subject of the oil painting is easily deduced: the text that narrates what is known as "Jesus and the Samaritan woman" or "The Samaritan woman at the well" is related in the Bible by St. John (4: 4-26). In art, it has a long tradition because of the text's allusions to water as "Divine Grace" or "Living Water" and because of the veiled allusion to the preaching and evangelization in it. Thus, we have it in paleochristian sarcophagi ("Sarcophagus of the Trees", Louvre Museum), on Mount Athos, in the work of Duccio, etc.
