This set of four canvases has been conceived in a similar way, with each of the protagonists represented either with the pen, or with a book that directly alludes to his religious role as the creator of the New Testament Gospels.
Regarding the protagonists of each scene we find St. Matthew, St. John, St. Luke and St. Mark. The first appears next to a small angel, in allusion to the fact that his Gospel begins with a review of the genealogy of Christ, the Son of Man. The eagle has been associated with the figure of St. John because his is the most abstract and theological Gospel, and therefore the one that rises above the others. The bull would be Luke, since his writings begin by speaking of the sacrifice that Zechariah, father of John the Baptist, made to God. Finally, the lion is identified with St. Mark because his Gospel begins by speaking of John the Baptist, "a voice crying in the wilderness," whose voice would be like that of the lion.
