Mainly self-taught artist, Planell was a member of the Maillol Circle of Barcelona. He became known in 1953, at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Barcelona. Only two years later he won a bronze medal at the Biennial of Alexandria, and was awarded a prize at the International Competition of Sacred Art. Since then he has participated in numerous exhibitions in various countries, often integrated in the group Sílex. In Barcelona he participated in the Salones de Octubre, and was a founding member of the Salones de Mayo. In 1959 he was part of the so-called Barcelona School, and in 1960 he participated in the Venice Biennial and in a group exhibition held at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Carlos Planell is represented at the MACBA.
